Torchiere. This type is among the easily recognizable varieties of floor lamps. Torchieres are also called torch lamps and were already being used in Europe even as far back as the 17th century. The lighting source then were wax candles that were mounted on tall stands made of metal or wood. Today's version, of course, can be of any lamp type (wax candles, incandescent bulbs, fluorescent light, halogen bulbs, etc.) and any stand material (wood, metal, plastic, composites, alloys, ceramics, etc). Torchieres usually take up only a small space in the room, are shaped unobtrusively, and provide well-diffused lighting by radiating the lamp beams towards the ceiling. For these reasons, torchiere lamps are highly sought after by building owners who intend to optimize limited spaces or project a minimalist style in the interior design.
Antique art lamps come in the styles from dated periods, like Edwardian, Nouveau, Oriental and Victorian themed lamps. They can easily enhance the room they are in, as long as the owner takes great care in putting them in the immediate surrounding that the lamps can easily blend into and complement.
Other than the traditional looking lamps, you will find many modern floor lamps featuring interesting patterns and designs. One such variety is the glass tray lamp, which has a tray positioned at height level of a table. This kind of lamp takes less space and is very handy as well. You can even get club lamps with adjustable heights. This sort of floor lamp is primarily used for area lighting. For adding a different look, you can pick the tower lamps. These not only give out ambient light, but also provide a sculpture like look. This makes such lamps look very artistic, and you will also bump into enormous varieties in this kind of line up.
When deciding on brightness, people need to figure out what the primary purpose of the lamp will be. This could be mood lighting, reading, decoration, or safety. For decorative lighting, an opaque fabric shade can be chosen. It illuminates the space from ceiling to floor. For reading and other tasks, a translucent lampshade will diffuse light. High quality paper or fabric shades are ideal.
